Dr. Mary E. Money

After devoting 44 years to private practice in primary care, 42 in Hagerstown, Dr. Money has decided to transition from Primary Care Associates of Hagerstown, LLC, to starting a telemedicine diagnostic consultation service in Internal Medicine for patients and physicians in Maryland.

Her dedication to medicine and ability to “think outside the box” has allowed her to help numerous patients with unusual problems.

She also potentially has more time than your primary care provider to research your complaint, review all of the tests that have been done to this point, and make clear recommendations to you to help solve your problem.  She is quite willing to discuss your concern with your primary care provider if desired.

Call 301-824-9240 now if you have an unresolved problem and get a second opinion.

Her ability to diagnose unusual conditions contributed to her fellow colleagues claiming that “she not only looked at the rocks, but what was underneath them”. She appreciates that too often patients are left confused about what is actually causing their complaints or what their medications are for and now wants to be that resource for patients to utilize when faced with questions about their health or their loved ones. She has learned not to “routinely accept” a prior diagnosis or established treatment recommendation and has been willing to try alternative therapies including adjunctive therapies for cancer. Although her instructors at the University of Minnesota in 1977 asserted that there was no association between the elevation of blood sugar and complications, she did not accept this and has practice intensified diabetic management for her patients.

She has been recognized nationally after being asked to testify for the Plaintiffs Hearing Committee after alerting both the company and the FDA about heart failure symptoms due to Avandia in 2000. (cbsnews.com/news/what-did-the-fda-know-about Avandia/; wsj.com/articles/SB122705732777039555) She recognized this association within 6 months of Avandia being approved when 3 patients developed atypical shortness of breath that was misdiagnosed as pneumonia and was actually heart failure. Although neither the company nor FDA acted upon her alerts, she enabled Washington County hospital to establish an alert system to advise physicians if one of their patients was having symptoms felt to be related to Avandia.

As a physician, she has always strived to put herself in her patient’s shoes to understand their problems first followed by attempting to explain it to the patient in such a manner that they can understand.  As a cancer survivor, she recognizes and can relate to patients who are having side effects from chemotherapy and offer information on adjunctive therapies that might help to delay a relapse.

Outside of medicine she has always tried to find time to be with her family, particularly her grandchildren. When she was actively practicing, she would deliberately schedule her patients around special school activities. At home she enjoys nature, having extensive flower beds, and a large vegetable garden.  She also tries to be quite active following the current medical guidelines of a minimum of 150 minutes a week of physical activity by playing tennis, hiking and exercising inside.
